The sea holds a deep a fascination for me as a watercolorist in terms of its constantly changing shapes and forms, its multifarious colors, its ephemeral lighting. A breaking wave captures all these attributes. As a metaphor, it represents something at once powerful and overwhelming as well as transient and impermanent. As a medical metaphor, a powerful wave is like a diagnosis overwhelming a patient's life, indifferent to what lies in its path, but itself transient in cosmic terms.
